Journal Entry For 2026-07-23

• [Trying to publish my thoughts as soon as they are half-formed to prevent me from publishing these journal entries days or even weeks late.]
• First few days of work while being a dad have been... interesting. I survive them, but I can already see that slips can easily turn into slides, as less than optimal moments can turn into less than optimal hours, afternoons, days, workweeks, etc. Keeping the plates spinning even if you slip takes some serious skill and makes me appreciate parents' (including my own) achievements and ways of being so much more.
• Inspired by this post, I moved a bunch of my private services onto my Synology and canceled my VPS (saves around ~200€ per year). I way overthought the whole thing. My NAS can be my whole homelab, if I keep it simple.^[1] I have a repo consisting of some light documentation, a docker-compose file and a few services that share redis/postgres as needed. Add to that a couple of scripts. That's it. Infrastructure as code.™ The db gets backed up by restic to OVH object storage using a script. I use Tailscale (for now) to access these services safely. I am thinking about moving my blog there, too. But it's more likely that I will rent a small VPS from OVH only for the blog. There might be downtime in December when the big VPS is gone and I didn't get around to do this yet, but I'm trying to be fine with this (and will hopefully move the blog beforehand, I have almost half a year...).
