I now have two AI subscriptions through my work: OpenAI and Anthropic, the latter replacing my Copilot sub. I feel that I manage to wrangle codex better to do what I want it to do but I like the feel of working with Claude more (if it would only be between the two, and ethics etc. wouldn't be a problem, I would probably get Claude for my personal use - as I have done before stopping to use/pay for it privately - again).
I tried to work on a useful Obsidian plugin to kick the tires in between turns with codex - so as to not piss away that effort. The new models are pretty good - relative to what these models can do - and the Claude business sub I'm on seems to include a lot of usage.
Anyway, I wonder if I could live with this compromise: building useful things or using it extractively for good (for certain values of "good"). "Extractively" in the sense of trying to get more out of it than I put in: bad for Anthropic's bottom line but good for the world, relatively speaking?
I read so much stuff about AI, everyone being so confident in their particular position. I was, too, I admit. But I can't bring myself to trust my "it's fine, not great, but you can do only so much" without ruminating about it like that. I have days, moments, where I almost want to resubscribe to Claude, because it feels like my "a Claude Sub is like a small reasonable car" metaphor (not great for the environment et. al., but it gets you where you need/want to go) holds and then there are times when it seems impossible to be in IT anymore because that means exposure to AI which in turn means reaching for the tool in my personal life and feeling its absence. Most times I believe the reasonable car metaphor, but not always.
And if I despise DHH enough to change password managers after 15 years, how can I resubscribe to Anthropic knowing full well that they gave to Omarchy, too? Is it less bad because they "only" gave compute/tokens? Do I believe that? What about the RUM deal?
Anyway the second. Nobody's going to read this whole stream of consciousness. But I had time to write this down while my boy drifted off to sleep next to me. Felt good.
